Strategic Market Expansion & Infrastructure Enhancement for Export Growth
Overview
Triton Ocean Products (TOP) is a primary and secondary seafood processing company based in Triton, Newfoundland and Labrador. The company produces bottled mussels in multiple flavours and operates a live lobster holding facility using cold ocean water intake systems that simulate natural environments. The HACCP-certified facility operates under regular CFIA inspections, ensuring high standards of quality, safety, and compliance. Following rapid early growth and major capital investment in a new automated processing plant, TOP initiated a structured export expansion strategy to scale into U.S. and Asian markets while enhancing infrastructure to support increased live lobster capacity.
The Objective
- Transition from primarily national sales to structured international export growth
- Establish direct relationships with U.S. retail chains and Asian distributors
- Develop export-ready marketing and sales materials
- Test and validate new bottled lobster product formats
- Expand live lobster holding capacity to support year-round export readiness
The Challenge
Despite strong early domestic growth, TOP faced structural barriers to international scale, including
limited established international buyer relationships, the need for export-specific product validation,
infrastructure constraints in live lobster holding capacity, and increasing buyer expectations
regarding quality, storage stability, and compliance.
The Strategy
- Conducted in-depth research to identify Asian distributors and U.S. retail buyers
- Developed a structured export sales funnel and executive outreach strategy
- Created pilot samples of bottled lobster in brine for international testing
- Developed export-ready branding, website, and trade show materials
- Participated in seafood expos and buyer meetings in North America and Asia
- Advanced infrastructure upgrades to improve live lobster holding capacity and quality control
Results
- Established multiple new international buyer relationships
- Secured pilot placements and advanced purchase discussions with U.S. retail chains
- Implemented a structured export sales funnel and executive engagement framework
- Enhanced live lobster holding infrastructure to support export volumes
- Achieved year-round export readiness for bottled mussels and live lobster
- Positioned the company for scalable international growth
This engagement transitioned Triton Ocean Products from rapid domestic growth to a strategically positioned international seafood exporter with scalable infrastructure, validated products, and a disciplined export market development plan.
